We frequently discuss the latest and greatest graphics cards and play games at the maximum settings, but there are instances when this is simply not possible.
Then we start looking for laptop friendly games.
We might still find the ones we like that can work well on our computers.
Whatever the reason, it’s wonderful to have a library of engaging games that won’t melt our computers in situations like these.
Check out Archie’s story.
I have been dreaming to become a professional gamer…
…but gaming laptops are expensive and I can’t afford them at the moment.
I started to check these laptop friendly games to at least let me spend my free time.
Although, then, my friend recommended me a good gaming laptop.
It fit my budget!
After saving a little bit more, I finally can buy my own.
Playing with computers that has a huge power is just a whole different experience!
This is what you need to know.
Fortunately, there are many older and even newer independent games that are compatible with low-end PCs and laptops with integrated GPUs.
It can be exhausting to scour Steam or your favorite PC game platform for something fun to play that won’t stress your system.
That’s why we’ve put together this list of fantastic games to recommend.

Most of these games will run smoothly even if your hardware is a few years old.
Some are perfect right out of the box, while others can be used with lesser settings depending on your hardware.
In general, you’ll want at least a dual-core processor, an integrated GPU from the last several years or better, and 4GB of RAM.
Even if your laptop just has Intel integrated graphics, you can play these games.
This is still more current than your ordinary old laptop, but it is by no means a gaming machine.

Among Us

If you’re up for a little deception with your buddies, Among Us is a game that practically everyone can play, regardless of how old their machine is.

If that’s all they have, it even has cross-play between PCs and phones. Anyone who has played Werewolf or other similar group tabletop games will recognize the format of Among Us.

A group of brilliantly colored space engineers is tasked with repairing a ship while figuring out who among them (get it?) is the imposter attempting to murder the rest of the crew.

It’s easier to pick up and play on a low-spec machine because the joy is in how successfully you and your pals can trick each other rather than elaborate lighting effects.

Old School Runescape

This oldie dates back to the days when low-end PCs were the rage. Runescape has been around for quite some time, and there’s a reason for that.

This MMO harkens back to a time when online games didn’t always lead you down a pre-determined route of quests and leveling possibilities.

The Old School version of Runescape transports you back to the game’s infancy. Without the wiki, you could find it difficult to get started, but it won’t put your PC to the test.

Fallout: New Vegas

New Vegas has also benefited from numerous excellent mods, including ones that lessen the amount of time the game crashes, and if you have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate/Game Pass for PC subscription, you’ll already have access to it.
With any of the Shadowrun games, you can’t go wrong. Although I still prefer the original Shadowrun Returns, Hong Kong is definitely the greatest of the bunch.
All three games are currently available for $26, and if you’re looking for something that works natively on Macs, the Shadowrun games do as well. (If you have one of the M1 laptops, they’ll work fine.)
Since its first revival in 2012, XCOM 2 has become a benchmark for turn-based tactics and is another Mac-supported game. Both XCOM games are playable on mobile and tablet devices, though I’ve always found that a good desktop or laptop provides the most consistent experience.
You might have better luck with the original XCOM if you have a really ancient system.
Either game is highly worth playing at least once if only to gain the knowledge of where so many other games get their inspiration. Xenonauts, on the other hand, is the way to go if you want a more punitive experience akin to the classic X-COM PC games from the 1990s.

Portal 2

Because of the excellent way the Source engine scales to lower-spec hardware, we could have included pretty much every Source engine game here. (Admittedly, this could be due to the fact that it’s getting on in years.)

Even if you had to play it at 800×600 with all the settings turned to ‘Low,’ Portal 2 remains one of the funniest, sharpest puzzle games around, even if you had to play it at 800×600 with all the settings turned to ‘Low.’

You’re not playing this game for the beautiful graphics effects; you’re playing it for Stephen Merchant, J.K. Simmons, and Ellen McLain’s fantastic voice acting, and, of course, for the potato bit.

Stardew Valley

Harvest Moon: PC was an independent hit that brought the peaceful agricultural life of Harvest Moon to the PC. Build a vegetable empire on your farm, go exploring, learn about your neighbors’ life, fall in love, and settle down.

Simple graphics ensure that this game will run smoothly on your laptop, and it will help you pass the time on long trips.

For a few years, Stardew Valley has legally promoted cooperative farming, which is an excellent way to return to Pelican Town.

Loop Hero

In 2021, this small strategy game was one of our early favorites.

You feel like you’re playing some forgotten VGA-era fantasy RPG from the moment the 16-color title screen fades in alongside dramatic chiptunes, a game that retains some of the mystique and complexity of 1991 but has been softly modernized to 2021.

Most significantly, all of this classically-inspired awesomeness is contained within a small installation that shouldn’t put your PC through nearly as much stress as your strategy talents.

Age of Empire IV

Intel Core i5-6300U or AMD Ryzen 5 2400G processors, 8 GB RAM, and Intel HD 520 or AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics card
Fans of real-time strategy games, rejoice! Age of Empires IV is out, and it upgrades everything that made the prior games so enjoyable. Not only has the game received a facelift, but the AI and gameplay have also been upgraded.
You can play as one of eight civilizations in four unique campaigns spanning 500 years of history, culminating in the Renaissance. However, you are not obligated to complete the single-player campaign. You can also play multiplayer co-op or PvP with your pals.
Also, you don’t need a powerful GPU to play, thus this is a terrific game to play on your laptop. All you need is integrated graphics that are at least as good as the Intel HD 520, which has been around since 2015.
